The instability of the earth’s layers in earthquake-prone areas reminds us of the importance of building earthquake-resistant infrastructure. A few weeks later, major flooding in Brazil was also in the spotlight. Extreme rainfall caused rivers to overflow, submerging many areas in the state of São Paulo. These floods caused major losses in terms of infrastructure, agriculture, and forced many residents to flee. Recovery from such disasters requires time and significant investment in restoring drainage systems and better water management planning. In Southeast Asia, tropical cyclones added to the list of natural disasters this year. A cyclone that hit the Philippines in March caused extensive damage, including landslides and flooding. Here, early warning systems are key to minimizing loss of life. Government efforts to increase public awareness and education regarding natural disasters are very necessary. Meanwhile, large bushfires in Australia this year show the effects of climate change are becoming increasingly evident. Fires hit a number of national parks, causing smoke that disrupted air quality in neighboring countries. Forest restoration programs and better land management are important agendas to prevent similar incidents in the future. The eruption of Mount Semeru in Indonesia is the next concern. The eruption that occurred ejected hot clouds and lava, forcing the evacuation of thousands of residents. Communities around vulnerable areas need to receive education about how to deal with this volcanic disaster, as well as the need for more intensive monitoring from the authorities. In the face of increasing natural disasters, international collaboration is also very important. Various countries share technology and knowledge in disaster mitigation. Several non-governmental organizations are also active in assisting the recovery process and providing assistance to the victims. Scientific data shows that the frequency and intensity of natural disasters will increase with climate change. Therefore, it is important for us to raise awareness of this phenomenon.
