Regardless of whether you play poker online or in person, there are a few basic rules to follow. Poker is a gambling game played with a standard pack of cards. Players place bets into a pot, and the highest-ranking hand wins the pot.
Poker is usually played with a standard pack of 52 cards, but there are also some variant games that use more than one pack. Cards are usually dealt face up, but some games are played with cards that are shuffled and dealt face down.
The first player to act has the right to make the first bet. After making the first bet, the rest of the players have the choice to match the bet, raise the bet, or fold. Typically, betting is done in a clockwise manner.
Ties between wild cards are broken when the high card breaks the tie. Ties are broken when there is a high card, but no pair or secondary pair. A high card also breaks ties when there are more than one person tied for the highest card.
The player who bets the most is said to raise. The person who bets the least is said to fold. A player who raises is said to call. The call is made when the player matches the previous bet, and the raise is made when the player raises more than the previous bettor.
If all of the players call, the hand is said to have reached a “showdown”. The players show their hands, and the highest-ranking hand wins.
